Twins Reach Deal With Catcher

Updated: 8:30 am CST November 24, 2011

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins have reached a $3 million, one-year deal with former Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit. The 30-year-old Doumit hit .303 with eight homers and 30 RBIs in 77 games for the Pirates last season. He can also play first base and the outfield, and should give the Twins some much-needed versatility and offensive pop.The Twins announced the agreement Wednesday. How much playing time Doumit receives next season could depend on the health of star catcher Joe Mauer, who missed much of last season with various leg injuries and illness. The Twins used Rene Rivera and Drew Butera as the primary backups to Mauer last year. Rivera hit just .144 and Butera batted .167, providing little offense when Mauer was out.

Joe Nathan Never Gave Minnesota Twins Chance To…

Read More: Frank Francisco (P – TOR), Ryan Madson (P – PHI), Heath Bell (P – SDP), Matt Capps (P – MIN), Jon Rauch (P – TOR), Glen Perkins (P – MIN), Joe Nathan (P – MIN), Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins

The Minnesota Twins trotted out Joe Nathan 394 times during the seven years he was healthy enough to close games for the organization. The veteran closer won’t be returning for an eighth season, however, as the 37-year-old signed with the Texas Rangers on Monday.

The Twins had originally mentioned that they would be interested in re-signing the veteran earlier in the offseason, but Twins president Dave St. Peter said that they were never given the option of matching the Rangers’ offer.

The Twins have a few options now that Nathan officially isn’t coming back. Twinkie Town mentions current Twins’ Glen Perkins, Jon Rauch and Matt Capps along with players like Heath Bell, Frank Francisco and Ryan Madson as possible options the Minnesota front office should look into before next season gets started.

There is the quick update of the day.
