Twins pitching prospect Gibson to undergo Tommy…

MINNEAPOLIS – Top Minnesota Twins pitching prospect Kyle Gibson will have reconstructive elbow surgery next week, putting him out for the 2012 season.

Twins general manager Bill Smith said Thursday that Gibson finished the first phase of a rehabilitation program for his partly torn ulnar collateral ligament. Gibson and the Twins decided the best treatment for the injury is Tommy John surgery, a common but complex operation that typically requires at least a full year to recover.

Smith said the right-hander will have surgery next Wednesday in New York.

Gibson was the team’s first-round draft pick in 2009.

Twins to recall pitcher Hoey for last month

The Minnesota Twins will add right-hander Jim Hoey to their bullpen for the final month of the season.

The Twins announced Thursday they’ll recall Hoey from Triple-A Rochester in time for today’s game against the Los Angeles Angels. Major league teams were able to expand their active rosters Thursday beyond the regular 25-player limit.

The hard-throwing Hoey was obtained during the offseason in a trade with Baltimore that sent shortstop J.J. Hardy to the Orioles. He has already had two stints with the Twins this season that didn’t go smoothly. He appeared in 17 games, throwing 14 innings with eight walks, nine strikeouts and a 7.71 ERA.

Mauer Out With Stiff Neck, Cuddyer Plays Hurt

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Joe Mauer walked into the Minnesota Twins clubhouse on Thursday morning and told team trainers that he could not play because of a stiff neck.

It was tough news for the reeling Twins, who are dealing with a number of injuries and were dominated in a home series by the lowly Baltimore Orioles.

And the news only got worse as the day wore on.

Francisco Liriano became the latest Twins player to hit the disabled list after lasting just two innings and Minnesota fell 6-1 to the Orioles on Thursday for their fifth straight loss.

Liriano gave up one run on two hits with three walks in two innings before leaving with a posterior strain in his left shoulder. That forced the Twins to put Friday starter Anthony Swarzak (3-4) into the game, and he gave up five runs on eight hits in 3 1-3 innings of relief.

The Twins were outscored 24-4 in the series by the AL-worst Orioles and were swept at home by Baltimore in a four-game set for the first time in franchise history.

“It’s frustrating, definitely,” Mauer said. “It’s been like this all year. We just can’t get guys on the field and get them on the field healthy. Obviously if I was able, I would’ve been out there today. But I just couldn’t go.”

Mark Reynolds hit a three-run homer and Jo Jo Reyes (7-10) allowed one run on five hits in six innings for the Orioles.

Justin Morneau had two hits, including an RBI double, for the Twins, who have scored one run or fewer in seven of the last 10 games.

Before the game, athletic trainer Rick McWane was discussing Mauer’s injury, which happened while he was tracking a fly ball while playing first base Tuesday night, when manager Ron Gardenhire interjected.

“Joe has to be available,” he said. “I only have one other catcher. If something happens to Drew (Butera), I told Joe, `You have to go in the game. We have no other choice.”‘

Mauer told them he would try to play if he was needed.

“He said he was going to have a hard time looking up for a pop fly. I said I’ll tell somebody else to go catch it,” Gardenhire said before the game.

Asked after the game if he could’ve played, Mauer said, “It wouldn’t have been a good idea, no.”

He said he had limited range of motion and “could barely drive” to the ballpark. He tried to hit several times during the day, but it was too sore.

It’s been a difficult season for Mauer and the Twins. Their star catcher, who is in the first year of an eight-year, $184 million extension, has played in just 70 games and is hitting .287 with one home run and 25 RBIs.

He missed most of the first two months of the season with a mysterious leg injury and has also had difficulties with a bad knee and the general soreness that comes from catching.

All the missed has put the hometown golden boy under criticism from fans for the first time in his life, and he was asked after the game about a perception that he is “soft.”

“Who’s saying that?” Mauer asked. “I think you ask anybody in here, anybody in this organization, they’ll tell you different.

“Ever since I came back I missed one game. People know in here how tough I am. I come to the park ready to play. Today I just physically I couldn’t get out there.”

Mauer certainly isn’t the only Twins player who has been hurt this season. The Twins have used the DL 24 times for 17 different players, including Justin Morneau, Jason Kubel, Jim Thome and Denard Span.

“Not even in roller (derby) do you have this many injuries,” Gardenhire said.

Even two of their most durable players have had their difficulties lately. Danny Valencia did not come to the ballpark on Thursday because he needed a wisdom tooth removed.

Michael Cuddyer missed nine games with a neck strain earlier this month and was hit by a pitch in the game on Wednesday night. An MRI on his left wrist came back negative on Thursday, which came as a surprise to everyone who heard the impact.

“It’s not good, but it is what it is,” Cuddyer said after going 1 for 4. “It’s not broken, so I can go out there and play.”

Said Gardenhire: “That’s just the way he is. He comes every day. No matter where I tell him he’s going to play, he just grabs a different glove and goes about his business. Whether he’s tired or not, fouled one off of his foot, it just doesn’t matter with him. He wants to be out on the baseball field.

“It’s not surprising at all. It’s refreshing, but not surprising.”

Mauer said he will make some adjustments to his offseason regimen to try to make himself more durable, but for now he’s concentrating on returning as soon as possible.

“It’s been a grind, not just this season but in the offseason and to finish up last year,” Mauer said. “I’ve just got to get healthy.”

NOTES: Hitters 5-9 went 1 for 17 with a single, three walks and four strikeouts. … The Twins have lost 13 of their last 15 home games. … The Twins continue their home stand with a series against the AL Central-leading Tigers. With Swarzak rushed into emergency duty on Thursday, LHP Scott Diamond was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to start against Detroit’s Rick Porcello.

Angels’ Trumbo, Bourjos provide a storm of power,…

Slugger Mark Trumbo and speedster Peter Bourjos have been dubbed “Thunder and Lightning,” and the youngsters joined forces to whip up a perfect storm for the Angels on Thursday night.

Trumbo hit another prodigious three-run home run, a third-inning blast into the back bullpen in left field that traveled an estimated 432 feet, just two nights after sending a 457-foot shot into the rock pile beyond the center-field wall.

Bourjos advanced two bases on grounders that didn’t leave the infield, scoring from second on Jeff Mathis’ infield single to the second-base hole in the second inning and going from first to third on Mathis’ tapper to the third-base side of the mound in the fourth.

The bash-and-dash attack backed another superb effort by Dan Haren, who gave up one run and five hits in eight innings to lead the Angels to a 7-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

“Vernon [Wells], Bobby [Abreu], myself, we’re still trying to find it,” right fielder Torii Hunter said of the three struggling middle-of-the-order veterans. “Our young guys, Trumbo, Bourjos and [closer Jordan] Walden, are keeping us afloat.”

Actually, they’re keeping the Angels well above water. The Angels rank 10th or below in the American League in runs, homers, on-base percentage and slugging, but they’re a league-best 30-15 since June 13 and have won 12 of their last 14 series.

They improved to 61-51 Thursday and are one game behind Texas in the AL West. Quiet before Sunday’s non-waiver trade deadline, the Angels are still in position to make some pennant-race noise in September.

“It’s been a weird year,” Hunter said. “People were writing us off because we didn’t get anything done at the [trade] deadline. People think we’re not playing well, but we are playing well. It’s there in the small print.”

It’s there in the aggressive way the Angels, especially Bourjos, run the bases. After scoring on the infield single in the second, Bourjos beat out a bunt single to lead off the third and raced to third on a slow roller that traveled about 20 feet.

“Typical tapper in front of the mound and he goes first to third,” Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire said of Bourjos. “I mean, really. I’d like to watch the video. I don’t think he went to second. I think he went across the mound. That’s how quick he got there.”

It’s there in the way the Angels play defense, killing rallies as they did in the eighth inning Thursday, when Bourjos made a strong one-hop throw home from center field and Mathis blocked the plate to cut down Danny Valencia, who was trying to score on Tsuyoshi Nishioka’s single.

There have also been plenty of large-print achievements, most notably the dominant performances of pitchers Jered Weaver, Ervin Santana and Haren, who improved to 12-6 and lowered his earned-run average to 2.81 Thursday night.

After a rough two-start stretch in which he gave up 11 earned runs and 19 hits in 102/3 innings, Haren has given up three earned runs and 14 hits in 242/3 innings of his last three games against Cleveland, Detroit and Minnesota.

“The last three games have been exceptional, but this is the way Dan can pitch,” Manager Mike Scioscia said. “Minnesota scored 11 runs [Wednesday] night and he shut them down. He’s had a couple of tough games, but he’s been as good as anybody in our league.”

And then there is Trumbo, the 25-year-old first baseman who leads the Angels with 21 homers and 62 runs batted in. He also leads AL rookies in those categories, as well as hits (91), doubles (20), runs (45) and total bases (178).

Trumbo has driven in at least one run with each of his last 10 hits, and he has 10 homers and 33 RBIs in his last 38 games.
